Action Alert from SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES

 September 24, 2022

America’s wild and domestic horses and burros need you now more than ever before.

20 years have passed since the first federal bill was introduced targeting a ban on horse slaughter, and now it seems that the current bill is in trouble.

Just this week during a Committee Meeting, the Safe Act H.R.3355 (the current anti-slaughter bill) was omitted from the upcoming markup calendar, which means it may never make it to the house floor for a vote this session.

How did this happen?

It was just recently discovered that the Committee had received letters from leaders of large member pro-slaughter organizations claiming strong opposition to the Safe Act by their member base.  Amongst groups sending letters was the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) and the National Tribal Horse Coalition (NTHC).

What the general public may not realize is that these groups have been proponents of the perverse slaughter trade for many years now. Still, the recent discovery of these letters and their contents have sent shockwaves across the country, especially for the animal loving community. The AVMA claims to be the official voice for the wellbeing of animals. They claim that horse slaughter is humane and that there is somehow a greater risk of animal suffering if horse slaughter were to be banned. The AAEP states their position is consistent with the AVMA.

Get the Truth. Know the Facts.

Horse slaughter is the one of the cruelest forms of animal abuse on this planet.
As exposed through the film, SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES A NATION BETRAYED, there is nothing humane about horse slaughter at all.

Per the Testimony Before the
US House of Representatives
Committee on the Judiciary
Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security Hearing on H.R. 6598, the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act, July 31, 2008,

"Horse slaughter has never been considered by veterinary professionals to be a form of euthanasia. Congress and the general public must hear from veterinarians that horse slaughter is not and should not be equated with humane euthanasia. Rather, the slaughtering of horses is a brutal and predatory business that promotes cruelty and neglect." - Dr. Nicholas Dodman, Professor, Section Head and Program Director of the Animal Behavior Department of Clinical Sciences at Tufts' Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in North Grafton,
Massachusetts.

"There is nothing humane about horse slaughter. From transportation to the use of electric goads, from slippery blood-spattered floors to the clanging and hissing of the apparatus, from the pop songs on the radio to the cussing of the killers, from the sight of horses being killed by those awaiting their gruesome fate to incorrectly positioned and operated captive bolt guns, from the grimacing and paddling of the half dead horses to their bleeding out while semi-conscious, nothing is respectful, nothing is humane.  It's all about profit under the pretext of "animal welfare" - the only way to dispose of so-called "unwanted horses
" - yeah right, Nick Dodman.

Horse Slaughter Issue & Updates:

Health Risks Associated with Consuming Horsemeat

Yes, TAINTED horsemeat in the International Food Chain is STILL a serious
HEALTH THREAT!

Various audits done after the 2016 EU ban of horsemeat originating from the U.S. have reportedly continued to reveal prohibited toxic contaminants, including carcinogenic substances on a repeated basis, regardless of whether slaughtered in Mexico or Canada. EU control mechanisms are insufficient & fraud is rampant system wide.

This should be a wakeup call to all Nations of people that consume horsemeat or that buy pet food containing horsemeat, or that care about animals.   Take note, the U.S. is not the only country that allows their equine population to be slaughtered for consumption after being treated with substances that are known to be lethal to humans.

Entertainment & Performance Horses

In 2102 the Wild For Life Foundation (WFLF) released a Case Study conducted on the number of Thoroughbreds that die at slaughter annually.  Based on data published by the U.S. government and the Jockey Club in the years 2002 – 2010, it was reported that an amount equal to 70% of the annual Thoroughbred foal crop, on average, die at slaughter each year. These facts caught the attention of some very prominent racehorse industry stakeholders which led to some significant and inspirational turnarounds from deep within the racehorse industry. Numerous former pro-slaughter groups and associations have since changed their positions and now support the anti-slaughter legislation.

There have also been record setting numbers of racehorses that have died on the tracks.  New protective measures have been implemented, together with programs to help prevent these catastrophic injuries and to help keep Thoroughbreds from going to slaughter. However, much more needs to be done. One thing we know for sure is that without federal protection, racehorse aftercare programs cannot safeguard our horses from the harm of horse slaughter.

No Horse or Burro in the U.S. is Safe from Slaughter

U.S. horses of every breed, age and gender get sent to Mexico and suffer horrific cruelty.  They are also still sent to Canada where they suffer horrific cruelty, plus prolonged suffering from agonizing injuries that are left untreated for another six months after they enter the slaughter pipeline in the U.S.

The LAST 1.3% of America’s Wild Horses & Burros are Facing their Last Stand Right Now!

America's wild horse & burro population has declined by more than 96% since the turn of the 19th century. Yet the BLM intends to aggressively reduce their presence in the wild to less than 98%.

Without an actual census in over 50 years, the BLM claims that there are around 90,000 too many wild horses and burros on the public lands. Based on the same, they have accelerated their cruel helicopter roundups this year.   Without protective intervention, the BLM intends to continue conducting their aggressively cruel roundups while at the same time implementing a combination of barbaric ovariectomies and permanent chemical sterilization activities, plus they are without a doubt sending wild horses and burros to slaughter. (click to learn more)

Protective Legislation is Long Overdue

Our Government as a whole, effectively LICENSES this CRIMINAL ANIMAL CRUELTY by continuing to allow the export of U.S. horses & burros for slaughter.

But this can be stopped! Federal legislation such as the Safe Act can create a permanent ban on the slaughter of U.S. horses for food and prohibit their shipment abroad for that purpose. It's a bi-partisan issue and the passing of this legislation is long overdue.

Countless wild & domestic horses & burros have lost their lives to the insidious horse slaughter trade, and there’s no end in sight, unless we fight for their federal protection. We can’t bring back those who are gone, but we can prevent the suffering & killing of future generations by telling their story. You can help by standing united and making their voice heard!

~~~~~
It's been 10 years since Dr. Nicholas Dodman of SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES, joined together with Senator Landrieu, D-La., Rep. Patrick Meehan, R-Pa., and Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., to introduce the original Safe Act. The legislation if passed would have prohibited horse slaughter operations in the U.S., end the current export and slaughter of more America’s wild and domestic equines, and protect the public from consuming toxic horsemeat.
Per USDA Data, approximately 903,510 American horses & burros were killed in foreign slaughterhouses from June 2012 - June 2022. This number does not account for the untold number of wild horses and burros exported under false pretenses.
Looking back from the future… if you could make a difference right now, would you?
We created this banner for the horses & burros in 2012, and here we are looking back.  Before you know it, another decade will have passed and countless more horses & burros will have fallen victim to this barbaric trade, if we don't work together to protect them.
Act now! Please don’t let another minute slip by without making a difference for these innocent sentient beings, our four-legged brothers, and sisters, who have been there for us throughout the years. They need us now, more than ever, to protect them and keep them safe.
At WFLF we believe that unity happens when people put their differences aside and stand together for the greater good. This is how we roll at WFLF SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES.  We hope that you agree and are ready to take a stand or renew your pledge and stand united in effort to help stop horse slaughter today.
You Can Help End the Perverse Horse Slaughter Trade by acting right now. Show your united support for the horses and burros today by sharing the true facts and information with your friends, your family, and your state & local government representatives. It’s up to ALL of US to Stand Up for what’s Right. Do what you can to help make a difference and do it as often as you can.
Lend Your Voice to the countless voiceless horses & burros in the U.S. and around the world. They need to be heard and the public needs to know the truth.
at-a-glance financial data illustrating annual income streams, together with functional  expenditures for program goods and services which meet the demands of the beneficiaries.
"We are overwhelmingly grateful for the support we receive for all those facing  life-threatening circumstances, crisis and illnesses. Without our supporters offering  this now and for as long as it is needed, we wouldn’t have the ability to deliver on our promise and make a lifesaving difference every day." - Jay Coskie, WFLF Vice President and Co Founder
"If everyone had the compassion and tenacious will exhibited by the Wild For Life
Foundation, we would never have to worry with our tears about these beloved companions who have been greater than the wings of our souls." - Kimme Black, WFLF Benefactor and Ambassador
In July 2018, Wild For Life Foundation celebrated its 10th anniversary of success in awarding winning charitable services and impeccable compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and operational policies.  And over the last year WFLF has taken considerable steps to demonstrate the board’s commitment to maintaining its high principles of integrity, objectivity and transparency.
This past year, WFLF’s leadership team laid out an ambitious ProActive Crisis Communications plan as part of an Emergency Response policy.  This is a plan and goal toward increased safeguards that protect the animals, the organization and its mission from conflicts of interest, adversary propaganda, conjecture and the dissemination of inaccurate information that may impact WFLF's purpose, the prevention of animal cruelty..
The Board of Directors (BOD) is committed to providing accurate information to the public and its oversight and governance practices transcend transparency and accountability.  WFLF ensures that donated funds are used exclusively for its exempt purposes. In fact, on average 97% of each dollar raised goes directly to the benefit of animals in need.  The BOD is fully satisfied that WFLF’s work is carried out wholly to advance WFLF's charitable purposes. The BOD additionally commends its all volunteer staff for maintaining such admirable functional efficiency over the years.
"We know the remarkable courage, strength  and sacrifice it takes to stand against the turbulent tide which threatens the future of these sacred beings, to whom we are all connected. We honor the kindred spirit of each and every supporter and the contributions received – whether financial, or goods, services or time. Charity is made possible when the needs of others touch that special place in our hearts and we are moved to sacrifice something dear that belongs to us, for the benefit of others. This is the essence of charity and the core principle which drives WFLF and all that we do.
Every day, countless names, faces, and lives are lost to inhumane and needless killing that can be prevented; this killing additionally places human lives at risk, contributes to toxic waste and environmental destruction, and it is our mission to see that this becomes a thing of the past. This is the path we’ve always been on." - Katia Louise, President, Wild For Life Foundation
WFLF has brought landmark attention, inspired growing support and positive change to benefit a variety animal species with a focus on equines, both nationally and internationally through multimedia educational programming, broadcast media, documentaries and rescue, and WFLF thanks their devoted supporters for helping to make this important work possible.
A Wink and Nod - Help Save the Devil's Garden Wild Horses from Slaughter
Captured Devil's Garden Wild Horses remain at risk of slaughter despite warnings from the California Attorney General Becerra for the USDA and the US Forest Service to comply with California's Penal Code § 598c which PROHIBITS the slaughter of California horses.
Horses over the age of 7 years old that are not placed through adoption or sanctuary will be offered for sale, and even if the Forest Service complies by limiting their sale to prohibit slaughter,  the sad truth is that the kill buyers will still come for them and with a wink and a nod, these horses can disappear never to be seen again.
BACKGROUND:
America's wild horse and burro population is under an escalated direct threat of the U.S.D.A, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), the Department of Interior (DOI), the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA).  All of these agencies have demonstrated aggressive pro-slaughter agendas, although many activities have been hidden from the public. Make no mistake - these agencies operate in tandem and are at the root of the proslaughter movement.
CALIFORNIA WILD HORSES:
Currently, the Modoc Forest Service is CHASING DOWN and TRAPPING 1000 California DEVIL'S GARDEN PLATEAU WILD HORSES with the intention to sell many horses without limitation, enabling buyers to purchase up to 36 horses for as little as one dollar each.
On Friday Nov 9, 2018 California Attorney General Becerra issued a WARNING to the USDA and the US Forest Service in Wash. DC, and both CA Forest Service Districts, to COMPLY with California Penal Code § 598c which PROHIBITS the slaughter of horses. Attorney General Becerra's warning comes within a few weeks of Saving America's Horses Global Call to Action to Stop the Slaughter of California's Wild Horses.
But the fight is far from over for California's horses and burros who are continuously shipped underground to slaughter almost every day, despite California's Penal Code § 598c.  Violating this law is a felony that carries a prison sentence of up to three years. Cal. Pen. Code § 598c(c). However, in the absence of federal protection, over 100,000 American horses are shipped across federal borders to slaughter plants in Mexico and Canada each year.
NATIONAL ISSUE:
In May 2018, the DOI ordered the BLM to empty out wild horse and holding corrals by selling 25 horses at a time with no questions asked to any buyer. Despite a prohibition on such cruelty by the Interior Appropriations Committee, the Interior Secretary has mandated that the horses must be sold. As pointed out by AG Becerra, this is a reversal of U.S. previous policy of following restrictions on the sale of wild horses that Congress regularly imposes on the federal Bureau of Land Management. Under these Congressional restrictions, wild horses cannot be sold for processing into commercial products, including food."
Wild Horse Crisis Alert Update
NOV. 19, 2018
RECENT ISSUE UPDATES:
Currently, the Modoc Forest Service is CHASING DOWN and TRAPPING 1000 California DEVIL'S GARDEN PLATEAU WILD HORSES with the intention to sell 100's of the horses without limitation, enabling buyers to purchase up to 36 horses for as little as one dollar each.
On Friday Nov 9, 2018 California Attorney General Becerra issued a WARNING to the USDA and the US Forest Service in Wash. DC, and both CA Forest Service Districts, to COMPLY with California Penal Code § 598c which PROHIBITS the slaughter of horses. WFLF applauds Attorney General Becerra's warning.  This is a strong stride forward for America's horses who depend on your united and continued action in raising awareness through the power of knowledge and truth.
On Oct. 13, 2018, Saving America's Horses issued a Crisis Alert and Global Call to Action with true facts about slaughter and the law, together with contact information for officials in power who can help enforce the law. We thank all of you who took action.  YOUR VOICE MATTERS
But the fight is far from over for California's horses and burros who are continuously shipped underground to slaughter, despite California's Penal Code § 598c.  Violating this law is a felony that carries a prison sentence of up to three years. Cal. Pen. Code § 598c(c). However, in the absence of federal protection, over 100,000 American horses are shipped across federal borders to slaughter plants in Mexico and Canada each year.
In May 2018, the DOI ordered the BLM to empty out wild horse and holding corrals by selling 25 horses at a time with no questions asked to any buyer. Under these Congressional restrictions, wild horses cannot be sold for processing into commercial products, including food."
As advocates in the ongoing fight for a national win against slaughter, one of our biggest challenges has been and remains getting the truth out in the open. What most people don't realize is that the disinformation campaigns related to our mission are driven by deep pocket special interests who do NOT really care about the horses at all. No matter what you've heard, there is only one truth: horse slaughter is NOT humane euthanasia. Nor is it a "necessary evil".
WFLF and Saving America's Horses urge all those who want to make a difference for the horses and burros, to stand united and make your voice heard. Armed with the knowledge of truth we can make a win against the pro-slaughter movement and their underhanded efforts, undermining devices, and misleading propagandaJoin us!
WFLF Saving America's Horses' speaks to the need for protection of America's wild and domestic horses and burros both locally and on a national level. "We are adamantly opposed to slaughter," states Jay Coskie, vice president, WFLF.  "We seek and support strong federal protection for these animals, for a permanent federal ban against slaughter in the U.S. and an end to their exportation from the U.S. for slaughter in foreign countries." "Without federal protection more than 100,000 wild and domestic horses and burros are funneled across U.S. borders for gruesome slaughter each year," added Katia Louise, president and director, WFLF.
Their future is our future
This little baby foal, just weeks old, was orphaned and left to die after being chased down in a
roundup. Her mother was shipped to slaughter that same day. This little foal collapsed shortly after she was rescued. Her body shut down from the trauma. She was rushed to the nearest veterinary hospital where she clung to dear life for 17 days before she finally recovered enough to be released. She is seen here in her hospital room with a loving young visitor. The actual death count from the number of horses that shipped to slaughter as a result of that roundup series rose to over 2,000; countless others disappeared as kill trucks loaded with torchered & terrified horses continued to ship across federal borders underground. This orphan foal is one of dozens whose lives were saved through a grassroots collaboration of charity rescue services - one of many successful lifesaving missions under WFLF.
This is MorningStar. She grew up in WFLF's volunteer driven sanctuary and is thriving today, thanks to the continued support of caring people who never once gave up on her or the countless other victimized wild and domestic horses and burros who rely 100% on charity to survive. Her inspirational story of loss, betrayal and survival through love and healing serves as a testament for the need to end this total injustice and utter suffering caused by roundups, and unspeakable slaughter, and the profound understanding of how saving their lives is in truth at the core of the future we share in this world together. Their future is our future. Please join us as we stand as one with the horse nation.
There are many ways to take part - from volunteering at a local rescue, to supporting the boots-on-the ground groups who work in the trenches and save the lives of individual horses and burros, to supporting the groups that advocate for stronger laws that are needed to end these practices and protect these animals, to supporting the powerful outreach and educational campaigns that can help raise the public outcry and action needed for change.
Take the first step by sharing this message far and wide. Be the change you want to see in the world. Make your voice heard. Click to watch and share compelling sound bite videos filled with facts, get information about pending legislation and connect with others in this movement. Aho!
It was the Year of the Horse – A look back at Horses Lives Saved
It was the Year of the Horse – A look back at Horses Lives Saved
Oct 29, 2018
In early 2014, the Wild For Life Foundation (WFLF) received requests from a New Mexico nonprofit for money, services and goods to save the lives of approximately 150 of its horses from slaughter. WFLF launched a specific grassroots Rescue and Recovery Mission to help aid and save as many of the horses as possible. WFLF relied on its impeccable reputation and hard-earned resources to raise the attention and support needed to save these horses.  WFLF's robust advocacy and rescue efforts on behalf of its mission to save the horses caught international media attention and was followed and supported by the nation's top equine coalitions, several national animal welfare organizations and many equine rescue groups.
The New Mexico nonprofit and its representatives repeatedly endorsed and thanked WFLF and its
Horses Lives' Saved
staff for their efforts in saving the horses’ lives. WFLF contributed large sums of money and valuable lifesaving services to the New Mexico nonprofit to aid and care for the at-risk horses that were being temporarily housed by the New Mexico nonprofit at dry lot cattle pens. WFLF expended over $18,000.00 in 2014 to evacuate and transport approximately 100 horses to new homes selected by the nonprofit. At the nonprofit’s request, and at WFLF’s expense, WFLF agreed to accept possession of approximately 48 of the least adoptable horses, including 3 pregnant mares, at two WFLF facilities in California. It cost WFLF over $55,000.00 to save the horses in 2014.  WFLF's costs to feed, house and care for these horses continued thereafter and have exceeded $150,000.00 since 2014.
In 2015, WFLF received an anonymous whistleblower report which eventually led to the termination of certain individuals and the parting of ways of the two organizations. Just before departing, a certain individual filed claims against two WFLF representatives.  The court dismissed both cases in their entirety less than one month after they were filed.
WFLF has moved on and continues to dedicate its hard-earned resources toward advancing our valuable and life-saving animal protection missions.  As demonstrated by numerous testimonials, reviews and awards, WFLF operates its services and programs with the highest level of integrity, compassion and honor. We have successfully saved hundreds of wild and domestic horses and burros from abuse, neglect, slaughter and other forms of cruelty. The animals served by WFLF are provided with quality tender loving care, and peaceful safe housing.
We appreciate the kind and generous contributions that our organization continues to receive in support of its work. Our focus remains steadfast on our principle objectives of saving, protecting and preserving America’s horses through rescue, sanctuary and education.
Every dollar goes to helping horses in need. No amount is too small.
Wild for Life foundation (WFLF) vigorously works to save, protect and preserve abused, neglected, displaced and slaughter bound wild and domestic equines, and educate to raise compassion and improve the standards of their protection.
WFLF accepts equines of all breeds, ages, genders and disciplines.  WFLF also works in conjunction with county animal services and offers lifesaving rescue and sanctuary services for equines who've been impounded at crowded county kill shelters.
WFLF promotes the protection and preservation of wild horses and burros on public lands through outreach and education.  WFLF's educational and advocacy programming serves to expose and resolve the inhumane practices and other questionable activities promoted by  U.S. government agencies and special interest groups which threaten the safety, welfare and future of wild equines in the wild.
WFLF's all volunteer staff works around the clock on these issues, but no part of WFLF's work to help animals would be possible without continued support.
A Message from Katia Louise, the Filmmaker of Saving America's Horses
Dear friends,
I'm humbled to bring you this update about Saving America's Horses, what the latest is regarding the issues and tell you a little more about the this film, how it came about,  and what's happening behind the scenes on the project itself as we continue to move forward in our mission to protect horses and burros.
PRODUCTION, RELEASE AND DISTRIBUTION: Research and investigation into the issues that this film centers on first began in 1998 and has continued through and into the production phase of this film which began in 2009. The first festival cut of this educational documentary film project was released worldwide in 2010 through the Los Angeles Women's International Film Festival where it won BEST DOCUMENTARY FILM. Subsequent festival cuts of the project were released thereafter through multiple festival screenings where the film won numerous international awards including BEST ENVIRONMENTAL FILM in Canada.
The film project was then completely remastered and reformatted in conformance with ST 428-2:2006 D-Cinema Distribution Master requirements as set by the ACADEMY OF MOTION PICTURE ARTS AND SCIENCES for Academy qualification and was then released with Oscar consideration and exhibited through BI-COASTAL THEATRICAL RELEASE in 2012.
This full length feature documentary film project has also privately screened at numerous educational venues across the country. The theatrical version of the full length film has recently been remastered and updated with new footage, current data and statistics, and is ready to go to the next level. A 10 minute featurette version of the film is also available in multiple formats for licensed short programming purposes. A series Advocacy Videos have also been produced through a compilation of excerpts from the film, and these remain available online WFLF’s websites and social media forums as educational tools for the benefit of the horses.
Many other multimedia educational tools and materials have also been created through select data, images and excerpts from the film project to raise awareness and educate the public about the issues as that have sadly continued to threaten America's equine population as a whole.
ABOUT OUR CAST, TEAM AND CREW: It has been a great honor to serve America's at risk equines through this multimedia educational program. Many of the nation's finest and most devoted equine welfare professionals and experts joined together through the making of SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES, and they graciously have contributed in many ways. Many of these experts have been deeply involved in this cause for over 25 years.
SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES is an independent educational film project under Wild for Life Foundation (WFLF), a Federally registered and fully compliant 501c3 all volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to saving, protecting and preserving equines. As a small grassroots charity, WFLF raised much of the needed funds to pay for the essential costs for production and release of the film during the various phases of distribution. Priority has been placed on benefiting the welfare, safety and protection of America's horses in every step along the way.
On a personal note, my role in the production of the film first began when I seeded the project while working as a teaching and performing artist, and doing small roles in film and TV projects. Although I have worn many hats in the process of making this film as an independent filmmaker, I have done so as a volunteer, without expectation or receipt of compensation for my time or services. I have humbly served on behalf of this and the other projects and programs under WFLF as a volunteer since the beginning. This has been part of my vow, my way of giving back to the animals and to our mission as a devoted animal advocate and animal welfare professional. -- All said however, my humble contribution represents just one of many contributions, or links if you will; links-in-a-chain of reputable individuals and organizations that have come together over the years and contributed to the completion and release of SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES; which would not have been possible without the full support of our dedicated and extraordinary cast, crew, and loving, devoted and compassionate donors..
Saving America's Horses tells the story of courage, honor and betrayal in a country divided, inspiring great hope for the protection for all horses and burros from cruelty. This powerful message speaks to the heart of this cause. Without unity, the pro-horse movement does not have the strength to stand up against the powerful deep pocket proponents of slaughter.
On behalf of WFLF and the dedicated team at Saving America's Horses, I urge all those who want to make a difference for the horses and burros, to stand in unity against the recent escalated efforts, the undermining devices, and misleading propaganda disseminated by the proponents of slaughter.
Make no mistake; this is a call to action for the full support of a united voice in the fight against horse slaughter, a cruel and barbaric practice that should have ended long, long ago.
Pledge now to stand united and to make your voice heard. Or, renew your pledge to show your support.
RECENT ISSUE DEVELOPMENTS: America's horses and burros need your voice today. Tens of thousands of wild horses' and burros' lives are at stake! In May 2018, the Interior ordered BLM to empty out wild horse and holding corrals by selling 25 horses at a time with no questions asked to any buyer. Despite a prohibition on such cruelty by the Interior Appropriations Committee, the Interior Secretary has mandated that the horses must be sold. All BLM public holding facilities must comply, whether they like it or not.
As advocates in this ongoing fight for a win against slaughter, one of our biggest challenges has been and remains getting the truth out in the open. Timing is pivotal, with the ongoing elimination of our wild horses from the rangelands, from holding areas, and with the escalated push by foreign investors to reopen horse slaughter plants in the U.S., more and more horses are suffering the cruel death of barbaric slaughter. A united voice for the horses must be restored and maintained. Time is of the essence.
What most people don't realize is that the disinformation campaigns related to our mission are driven by deep pocket special interests who do NOT really care about the horses at all. No matter what you've heard, there is only one truth: horse slaughter is NOT humane euthanasia. Nor is it a "necessary evil".
When the value of life is reduced to the cost of a pound of flesh; cover ups can easily gain momentum, and precious ground can be lost when advocates are pitted against one another and lose track of the goal. However; when the dust settles strength can be found in one single moment of truth. And that moment has come.
WFLF and its Saving America's Horses educational project has stood the tests of time. We've come through the fire and we are still standing because our documentation is incontrovertible.
It remains our chief objective at Wild For Life Foundation and Saving America's Horses to bring the truth to the public and to effect the changes needed for the protection and preservation of equines in America.
We are here for the horses and burros, and we've got the truth on our side.
With blessings of light, compassion for all, and in prayer for our horses,
yours sincerely,
Katia Louise
Open Letter from Ginger Kathrens
Open Letter from Ginger Kathrens: Our Wild Horses are Slaughter-Bound
Please contact your Congressmen now!
Appeared first on www.cloudfoundation.org
The threat to our public lands in the West is real. The Secretary of the Interior sees little value in preservation. Rather he seeks to maximize revenues from ever-expanding oil and gas and mining operations, while propping up the money pit known as welfare ranching.
So where does this leave America's wild horses and burros and other wildlife who rely on public lands managed by Interior's Bureau of Land Management (BLM), long jokingly referred to as the Bureau of Livestock and Mining? (The "joke" has become chillingly real.)
Interior has ordered BLM to empty out wild horse and holding corrals by selling 25 horses at a time with no questions asked to any buyer. These are wild horses who once roamed free at little cost to the public. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to diagnose the outcome for these helpless wild horses who have lost freedom and family and will now make the ultimate sacrifice. They will end up dying a horrific death in Mexican and Canadian slaughterhouses.
Despite a prohibition on such cruelty by the Interior Appropriations Committee, the Interior Secretary has mandated that the horses must be sold. All BLM public holding facilities must comply, whether they like it or not.
Congress Approves Protection from Slaughter for America's Horses through Omnibus Bill
March 22, 2018 - Washington, D.C, The Wild For Life Foundation (WFLF) commends the U.S. Congress, with special thanks to Senator Lisa Murkowski and Senator Tom Udall for their devoted support in maintaining protections from slaughter for America’s horses through the final Omnibus spending bill for 2018. The Omnibus just released by the House of Representatives continues prohibitions on destruction and sale for slaughter of healthy wild horses and burros, and maintains the ban horse slaughter through the defunding of USDA horse slaughter inspections, without which horse slaughter plants cannot operate in the U.S.
"We are especially grateful to Senator Lisa Murkowski and Senator Tom Udall for including wild horse protections in the Senate bill and insisting that they be contained in the final bill,” said Katia Louise, President Wild For Life Foundation.
In March 2017, the Interior Department asked Congress to lift long-standing prohibitions on the
destruction of healthy wild horses and burros and the sale of these animals for slaughter through the release of its 2018 budget. Had their budget request prevailed in the Omnibus bill, nearly 100,000 wild horses on public open ranges and in government holding facilities could have been killed.
Wild For Life Foundation and Saving America's Horses is dedicated to continuing our fight to save these majestic and historic animals  through hands on rescue, outreach, education and sanctuary. WFLF urges the public to beware of pro-slaughter proponents and their questionable practices as they continue their work against the protection of wild horses and burros from brutal killing and slaughter of mustangs and burros,
Founded in 2008, Wild for Life Foundation (WFLF) is an all volunteer nonprofit charity dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals with a focus on animal welfare and the protection of wildlife. We are dedicated to elevating life and healing through the prevention of cruelty to animals. WFLF works at the forefront of efforts to rescue and provide safe harbor for at risk animals, providing the space, natural habitat and quality of care which they deserve.
The WFLF is internationally recognized as a leader in animal welfare -- among our greatest concerns are victimized imperiled equines. We vigorously work to save, protect and preserve abused, neglected, displaced and slaughter bound wild and domestic equines, and educate to raise compassion and improve the standards of their protection. Fundamental to the core of Wild For Life Foundation’s animal protection mission is our commitment to assure safe harbor for each and every animal that comes through our doors. WFLF is a no-kill organization and will only consider euthanasia in cases of untreatable suffering. WFLF works in conjunction with law enforcement agencies and provides lifesaving rescue, urgent and primary care, rehabilitation, adoption and sanctuary for at risk wild and domestic equines in need. We accept equines of all breeds, ages, genders and disciplines.  Donations to the Wild For Life Foundation are tax deductible to the full extent permitted by law. Fed ID No 26-3052458
Rescue horses and burros urgently need your help today!
Now in our 10th year of operation, the Wild For Life Foundation (WFLF) has long leased equine properties in Southern California’s rural communities to serve and house at-risk horses from California and from across the country. Just recently however, the new property owners where we had been housing over 40 rescued wild and domestic horses and burros began to repurpose the land to serve commercial livestock interests.  Our all volunteer staff has been working around the clock to secure new safe long term housing for the rescue animals we serve.
Affordable equine property suitable to serve large numbers of rescue and sanctuary animals is hard to come by due to competing demands for pasture space by commercial livestock producers and the need to turn a profit by agricultural landowners.  This makes it extremely difficult for a small but effective charity on a tight budget like WFLF to carry out our life saving mission. These rescue equines have nowhere else to go.
We are pleased to announce that through the steadfast and continued compassionate support of our caring animal loving community WFLF has successfully relocated its rescue and sanctuary residents through its safe haven rescue program. And though WFLF has continued to come through for these and countless other at risk equines, year after year, we are not out of the dark. Costs for providing for the essential needs of these animals must be covered. Tax deductible donations are needed to pay for their continued primary care including quality hay, health care and transport expenses.
Through ongoing contributions to WFLF, these precious resources enable WFLF to serve the essential needs of America's at risk horses and burros and to build capacity and save more lives. We provide a safe and healing environment for incoming imperiled equines that have nowhere else to go and who need special time to recover and heal from emotional trauma and physical injuries sustained prior to their arrival.  And when resources are thin, WFLF must scale back capacity in effort to assure sustainment of quality continuum of care and charitable animal services. We also partner with sister organizations and private individuals to provide special placement opportunities for foster and adoption candidates in need.  These at risk animals depend on our charity to provide for their lifesaving medical care, food and shelter.
Ongoing tax deductible donations are vital to ensuring that our nonprofit can carry out its lifesaving mission for these precious innocent animals.  You can help make a difference today with a lifesaving contribution in any amount.
Extremely hazardous conditions for horses in North County San Diego
Local rescue mustangs face hazardous conditions as officials predict S Cal. fires to burn through Christmas – with more evacuations to come.
Impact of Fire on Horses - Wild For Life Foundation's Lifetime Equine Refuge has a number of wild mustangs located in northern San Diego county fire alert area. Some WFLF horses were evacuated out of the Bonsall area Thursday shortly after the "Lilac fire" broke lose. However the majority of WFLF's horses are wild Mustangs which means evacuation centers are not an option. "We have no choice but to 'shelter in place' in accordance with county fire preparedness guidelines", said Katia Louise, WFLF spokesperson. "A new fire broke out in Ramona yesterday, headed our way, but firefighters thankfully got it under control by nightfall."
The fires in N County San Diego continue to burn and threaten area horse rescues and sanctuaries, including WFLF's. "Our horses are currently safe, but we are not out of danger". On Thursday a new fire exploded from half an acre to 500 acres in 20 minutes, and burned over 4,100 acres in a few hours. The flames consumed the area so quickly that 46 horses died in their barn stalls at a professional equine training center with roughly 450 horses onsite; staff on foot running through smoke and flames setting untold numbers of horses free from the burning structures. Chaos broke out within seconds with panicking lose horses frantically stampeding in circles, with burning branches falling from above.. A number of the survivors have since evacuated to Del Mar race track which can hold up to 1500 Domestic Barn horses.
"These evacuation centers are simply NOT an option when you have wild mustangs or pasture horses, and if power goes out, we’ll be looking at how to get water trucked in," Katia added.
The recent southern California wildfires which now span from Santa Barbara to San Diego are placing additional strains on local equine rescue charities like WFLF, at a time when resources are already tapped. Options for placement are immediately wiped out when fire strikes - and when fire alerts span such a large region, any and all available equine space must be reserved for evacuees.
Transportation challenges hamper road closures and new fires are popping up, others still burning and spreading and so much of the region under fire alert and without power… The need for resources during these emergencies, especially equine transport, far exceeds the number of horses whose lives lay in the balance. News of California wild fires has gone global with a strong outpouring of support for the countless number of people and animals who have been displaced by the fires.
It's especially disturbing when news breaks about horses getting trapped by the fires and burning to death. Many people are following the stories on social media where comments range from utter shock and sympathy to anger pointed at victims who were not able to set their horses free. It's important for people to understand and remember that horses are flight animals and they panic. When domestic horses get lose in a fire storm, the level of extreme hazard multiplies for everyone. When scared they return to the place that's most familiar and if the smoke is thick they could run straight into the fire, or they could have a head-on with a car. And though horses should never be left unattended in a barn or confined to a stall that's in the path of a fire, when evacuations become mandatory for area residents, sometimes the option of evacuating horses does not exist.
Equine rescue professionals who attend fire preparedness workshops provided by county fire and animal officials are advised that when evacuating is not possible it's best to 'shelter in place'. And to be successful, many preparations are needed. In addition to having plenty of emergency provisions and supplies on hand, horses need to be removed from their barn stalls and placed in an arena or other large safe enclosed space where they have room to move around, and have access to water. A clearing with a 100' minimum all the way around the safe harbor space is highly recommended in order to keep the flames at a safe distance from the horses. It is however still likely that they will sustain smoke inhalation injuries and burns from falling embers. It's always best, if you can to evacuate, and to evacuate early, but sometimes that's just not possible. Many horse people get this, and if it comes down to setting them free, there are no guarantees - that's when it's a truly desperate situation. If the unthinkable happens, there is most likely a family of deeply broken hearts, devastated by the loss of their beloved horse(s). When we break news of this nature, we strongly encourage people to be compassionate and understanding - these are extremely challenging and painful times.
For every horse that makes it through a fire, there is an unsung hero whose sacrifice has made saving their life possible.
As of 12-9-2017: Fires continue to burn from Santa Barbara to San Diego, with over 76 horses dead, unknown numbers of horses need medical care for burns, roughly 170,000 acres scorched, and 190,000 people out of their homes. 20,000 customers in northern San Diego are without power, many of them in rural areas like us, where no power means no water unless you have a generator and fuel.
